Mindfulness Therapy

Spirituality & Inner Work

We often think of meditation as something that happens in the mind — a quieting of thoughts, a turning inward. But long before the mind settles, the body attunes. And sometimes, the simple act of how we sit can be the most profound gateway into the practice.

Rooted and Rising: A Posture Beyond Form

There’s something powerful about sitting upright. Not in the military, shoulders-back kind of way — but in a way that feels aligned, grounded, and natural.

Whether you’re on a cushion or a bench, allowing your sit bones to rest downward and your spine to reach upward creates a sensation of both anchoring and expansion. You’re connected to the earth, and yet reaching toward the sky. Solid, yet open. Still, yet alive.

As you experiment with this shape, you might find what I call the secret spot — that sweet place where your body feels like a tall building with a grounded foundation and a spacious, rising frame. You’re not stiff, and you’re certainly not slouching. There’s a subtle sway, like a tree in windless air. Alive, but not striving.

The Shape Is The Practice

In this way, posture is the discipline, as an invitation. A framework for the meditation. A gentle holding place. To ignore it is to allow a loosening that dilutes, and to over form the shape, concretizes it into struggle.

The Mind Softens Into Shape

Much like a yoga pose that you eventually “settle into,” this upright posture invites the mind to release its grip. You’re not forcing yourself to relax — you’re creating a shape where a settling can occur.

When the body feels contained, the mind can rest. It no longer needs to tighten, race, or affirm its presence by clinging. The shape of the body becomes the place to return to.

When you find this posture — your unique version of it — something shifts. Like the protective casing of an orchid bud, the body holds to allow for the space inside. Your awareness. Your presence.
