To meditate is simply to sit, and stay.
The act of meditation appears so complicated to most of us. We are told we need to “do something specific with the breath, sit in this way, but not that way; focus here, no, focus there.”
It becomes ripe territory for the mind to take us over and turn the event into another act of self-aggression. Beneath all the fixing, doing, changing and improving, is something else.
Does it feel good? Not usually, though sometimes it is peaceful and calm. Most of the time we just become aware of how busy our minds actually are. This is not a problem.
When we tolerate the activity of the mind, at some point the body just naturally stills a bit. Being open and gentle toward whatever is happening is the practice.
Can I be with this? And if the answer is no, no problem, try again another time.
